El Mercat is a neighborhood belonging to the Ciutat Vella district, located in the center of the city. It borders El Carmen to the north, La Seu to the east, Sant Francesc to the south and El Pilar to the west. 

Until the mid-fourteenth century it was a suburb outside the Moorish wall of Valencia but the construction in 1356 of the new wall by Pedro IV the Ceremonious in 1356,  included it within the walled city. El Mercat  was further configured through a series of architectural landmarks, like Lonja de la Seda (15th century), and the Church of Santos Juanes (between the 14th and 18th centuries). 

The church itself had porches on its ground floor where stalls were located, reinforcing the function of the market,  and becoming one of the most important objects in the city. It was the construction of the Central Market, at the beginning of the 20th century, on the site of the old Convent of the Magdalena, which gave the definitive commercial configuration to the neighborhood. 

In the first decades of the 20th century, what constituted, in urban terms, the most radical operation that has affected the neighborhood was carried out: the opening of Avenida del Oeste. 

The disengagement that the El Mercat neighborhood had from others, such as Velluters, was the beginning of a process of degradation for both, from which the area has not yet managed to recover.
