The Pilar, also known as Velluters, is located on the west side of Ciutat Vella, with Avenida del Oeste as one of its main thoroughfares. El Pilar was named after the old Pilar Convent (Convento del Pilar), which was founded here in 1618. Every March, one of the most monumental fallas in Valencia’s historic center is erected in front of its church.

Velluters is the historical name of this neighborhood because it is where old vellut (velvet) weavers settled at the end of the 15th century. The Guild of Velluters (Gremio de Velluters) regulated the trade, and its headquarters became the College of the Major Art of Silk (Colegio del Arte Mayor de la Seda) in 1686, today the Silk Museum, on Calle del Hospital.
